A few years ago, my Fourth of July looked a little something like this: my family and maybe a few friends gathered at a park, grilling burgers and hot dogs while bowls of potato salad and fruit salad sat on a picnic table nearby. There were sodas of all kinds, adults chatting, and kids running around playing games. Then, as the sun went down, the fireworks would begin. It was a good day all the way around. It was fun, relaxing, and filled with memories.
But as time went on, things started to change, and honestly, I was okay with that.
When Fourth Of July Changed
There was one year when my family didn’t go to a park and didn’t spend the day with friends. Instead, we stayed home. We still grilled burgers and hot dogs, but we never left the house.
At first, I was disappointed because I thought that meant I wouldn’t get to see any fireworks. But as the evening went on, I realized there is more to the Fourth of July than fireworks. It is about our country. It is about freedom. It is about spending time with the people you love.
That year taught me something important. We didn’t need a park, a big gathering, or even a fireworks show to enjoy the holiday. We already had everything we needed right there at home.
After that, the Fourth of July was never quite the same, and I was perfectly fine with that. The reason was simple: I was with my family. We watched fireworks on television, played games, enjoyed good food, and spent quality time together. For me, that was more than enough.
Fourth Of July In 2026
This year, things looked a little different once again.
My parents went camping, my brothers were doing their own thing, and my sister lives about two hours away. So, of course, I did what seemed like the only logical thing to do—I drove two hours to spend the Fourth of July with my sister.
Our celebration looked very different from the Fourth of July’s I remembered growing up. We stayed home, made good food, and spent the day talking and enjoying each other’s company. There were no park gatherings and no traditional cookout menu, but that didn’t make the day any less special.
The Food!
What kind of food blogger would I be if I didn’t talk about the food?
For years, our Fourth of July menu usually included burgers along with hot dogs, bratwursts, or sometimes both. This year, however, my sister and I decided to do things a little differently. And when I say a little differently, I really mean completely differently.
Our menu included homemade bacon macaroni and cheese, homemade cornbread, and chicken wings covered in dry rub and smothered in barbecue sauce. And trust me, you didn’t hear me complaining.
With sticky barbecue sauce on my fingers—and probably on my face too—I wasn’t missing those burgers and hot dogs one bit. Between me, my sister, and her husband, we made far more food than the three of us could possibly eat, but let’s be honest: is there really such a thing as too much homemade food?
Now, I know this story is a little shorter than some of my others, but that is because I am writing it while visiting my sister. Quality time means a lot to me, and I want to spend as much time with her as possible. Still, I wanted to take a moment to share this story with you.
Whether it’s the Fourth of July, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or any other holiday, one thing will always stay the same: I will be spending time with family. Whether that’s my entire family gathered together or just a few family members sharing a meal, I know I won’t be alone.
And if you know me at all, you probably already know one more thing. No matter where I am or who I am celebrating with, you can almost always find me in the kitchen.
Until Next Time…
Stay Saucy
