Layers of Comfort: Homemade Lasagna

Hello Friends!

I have a confession to make. My blog is filled with recipes, but somehow, I have never shared a lasagna recipe. Until now.

When I think of a pasta blog, I think of pasta classics. Alfredo, spaghetti, and of course, lasagna. Before I started writing this post, I actually searched through my blog to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind. Surely I had posted a lasagna recipe before, right?

Wrong.

To my surprise, there wasn’t a single lasagna recipe anywhere on Pasta-tively Delicious. So today, we’re fixing that. Grab your saucepans, mixing bowls, and baking dishes because tonight, we’re making lasagna!

My First Experience With Lasagna

When I made lasagna for the first time, I wasn’t confident enough to cook an entire meal on my own yet. Even though this recipe is fairly simple, I still had my parents helping me along the way.

One of them showed me how to make the meat sauce while the other worked on the cheese mixture. When it came time to assemble everything, I did most of the work myself. I layered noodles, sauce, and cheese over and over until I had four glorious layers of meaty, cheesy lasagna ready for the oven.

Unfortunately, our masterpiece never made it there.

Instead, it ended up on the floor.

Now, don’t worry. I’ve already told that story, so I won’t make you hear it all over again. If you’d like to read about my infamous “lasagna meets the floor” moment, you can find it in my story, Layers of Tragedy (and Cheese).

As for what happened to that poor lasagna? You’ll have to read the story to find out!

Lasagna Brings People Together

Lasagna has always been one of those dishes that brings people together.

Think about it. What meal is almost guaranteed to show up at a potluck? What dish often gathers everyone around the dining room table? What pasta classic seems to be loved by just about everyone?

Lasagna.

Growing up, I ate lasagna all the time, and it quickly became one of my favorite meals. It was the kind of dish that encouraged everyone to sit down together because trying to balance a plate of lasagna anywhere else was usually asking for trouble. Between family dinners, potlucks, and special gatherings, lasagna always seemed to make an appearance.

That’s why I truly believe lasagna brings people together. It isn’t just a meal. It’s something meant to be shared.

Meaty, Cheesy, and Bubbly

Have you ever opened the oven and immediately known that what was inside was going to be amazing?

I have, and it’s one of my favorite feelings in the world.

Lasagna is one of those dishes. As it finishes baking, the aroma fills the kitchen and makes it almost impossible to wait. Then you pull the pan from the oven and see the bubbling sauce and beautifully melted cheese on top.

There’s a saying that we eat with our eyes first, and I completely believe that’s true. Before you’ve even taken a bite, you can already tell you’re about to enjoy something special.

And when that dish happens to be pasta? Even better.

Simple But Delicious

You’ve probably heard the phrase “simple but elegant.”

Well, I have my own version: simple but delicious.

That’s exactly how I would describe this lasagna. With only six ingredients, there’s a good chance you already have at least a few of them in your kitchen right now. Even if you need to buy everything, this recipe is still budget-friendly and easy to put together.

The assembly may take a little patience, especially if you’re new to making lasagna, but the process itself is simple. My version has four layers, which creates the perfect balance of noodles, meat sauce, and cheese in every bite. Of course, you can always adjust the number of layers to suit your preferences.

As for the delicious part, I don’t think I need to explain that.

After all, it’s lasagna.

Layers of Comfort: Homemade Lasagna

Prep Time

Cook Time

Total Time

1 Hour 15 Minutes

Servings

6 Servings

Ingredients:

  • 12 Lasagna Noodles
  • 1 lb. Ground Beef
  • 1 Jar Marinara Sauce (see notes to make your own)
  • 2 Cups of Mozzarella Cheese
  • 1/2 Cup of Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 Cup of Cottage Cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package directions. Drain and set aside. While the noodles are cooking, brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. Drain any excess grease, then stir in the marinara sauce until well combined.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Set aside about 1/2 cup of the cheese mixture for the top of the lasagna.
  4. Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce across the bottom of an oven-safe baking dish. Place 3 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce. Add a layer of meat sauce followed by a layer of the cheese mixture. Repeat this process until you have 4 layers of noodles.
  5. Spread the reserved cheese mixture evenly over the top of the lasagna. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the center reaches 160°F and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Allow the lasagna to rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes & Tips

  • Homemade Marinara Sauce
Want to make it extra special? Try using homemade marinara sauce instead of store-bought. It adds a fresh, homemade touch and gives you complete control over the flavor. Try my homemade marinara sauce recipe.
  • Let It Rest
Don’t skip the resting time. Allowing the lasagna to rest for about 10 minutes after baking helps the layers set and makes it much easier to slice and serve.
  • Drain The Beef Well
Drain excess grease from the beef. This helps keep the lasagna from becoming oily and allows the flavors of the sauce and cheese to shine through.

What To Serve It With

Lasagna is an amazing meal on its own, and can be a well balanced meal too if you decide to add vegetables into it. But if you want more than just the lasagna, then here are a few side dish ideas to make your meal go from amazing to spectacular!

  • Garlic Bread
Crispy, buttery garlic bread is the perfect companion to lasagna and great for soaking up any extra sauce.
  • Side Salad
A simple green salad adds a fresh, crisp contrast to the rich and cheesy layers of lasagna.
  • Roasted Vegetables
Roasted broccoli, zucchini, or asparagus help round out the meal while adding a pop of color to your plate.

There is a reason lasagna has stood the test of time. It is warm, comforting, filling, and perfect for sharing with the people you love. Whether you’re making it for a family dinner, a potluck, or simply because you’re craving a classic pasta dish, this recipe is sure to bring a little extra comfort to your table.

If you give this recipe a try, I would love to hear how it turned out! Leave a comment below and let me know if you stuck with the four layers or created a towering lasagna masterpiece of your own.

Until Next Time…
