Some People Collect Shoes. I Collect Kitchen Tools!

Ah, yes. Kitchen tools! Something I know quite a lot about—probably because I have way too many of them. Some may call me crazy, others may call me brilliant, but I call myself prepared. When you have as many kitchen tools as I do, you’re never stuck thinking, “I don’t have the right utensil for this.” You always have it. You always have everything.

Spatulas, Tongs, And Spoons, Oh My!

You may want me to, but for your convenience, I am not going to list off all the kitchen tools I have—because we don’t have nearly enough time for that. If I did, this entire post would just be about what kitchen tools I own… and let me tell you, there are a lot of them.

But if I had to narrow it down, I’d tell you about the main tools I have—the ones I use the most.

First up: spatulas. Yes, there’s an S there, because I have more than one. I have several. And I don’t just have regular spatulas either—you know, the ones with the slots. I have all the different kinds of spatulas. Again, I’m not going to name them all (even though there really aren’t that many). I trust you can look at the image below.

Next are serving spoons. I don’t have as many of those as I do spatulas, but I do have plenty. I don’t have every type of serving spoon, but I do have a slotted spoon, a few large spoons, and a basting spoon. And then there’s my spider. Not necessarily a spoon, but it does have a bowl, so I thought I’d count it. If you don’t know what a spider is, it’s used for deep frying—basically a wire basket attached to a handle.

Finally, there are tongs. Tongs are… well… tongs. There isn’t much to say about them, except that I only have two pairs, because that’s really all you need. Unless you want more than two—in which case, respect.

Baking Utensils Galore!

Yes, yes, I know. Baking utensils can be mistaken for cooking utensils—but hear me out. Do you use measuring cups more for baking or more for cooking? If you said cooking, then… I’m sorry—but also not. I understand wanting to stick to the recipe, but at the same time, you can dump and still have it taste amazing.

If you said baking, then great minds think alike. I would’ve said baking, too! When it comes to baking, measurements have to be precise, or whatever you’re making just won’t turn out right. Trust me—my family and I would know.

With baking, you use measuring spoons, measuring cups, spatulas, whisks, spoons, scoops, scales… the list goes on. And it all depends on what you’re baking, too. Take bread, for example. You’ll likely be using a scale, measuring spoons, and maybe even a few measuring cups. Bread is one of those things I could never make properly—except in culinary school—but that’s a story for another time.

What about cake or muffins? Measuring spoons and cups for sure. And definitely a whisk—unless you have a KitchenAid. In that case… you go!

Baking supplies are actually what I use most when cooking. Yes, I did say dump, but there are still some dishes that need precise measurements or they just won’t turn out right. Take pasta, for example. If you’re making fresh pasta (I love you already!), you need the exact amount of flour and eggs, or else the pasta will be too dry or too wet.

When I cook, baking supplies are my best friend. I have:

  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Peelers
  • Knives
  • Whisks
  • Zesters
  • Lemon juicers
  • Measuring bowls (yes, really)
  • And More…

And that’s only naming a few! I have boxes upon boxes of baking supplies. The best part? I actually use most of the stuff I have—and yes, before you ask, I definitely have my favorites.

Hidden Cooking Utensils?

Do I really have hidden cooking utensils? Well… yes and no. Yes, because I have more on the top shelf of my closet (hey, you knew what you were getting into when you read the title). And no, because I’m not hiding them from anyone—I just have nowhere else to put them.

You can only have so many shoeboxes under your bed! Yep, you read that correctly. Shoeboxes. Under the bed. Hey, it keeps the monsters away! And don’t worry—everything is labeled so I know what’s in which box. Smart, I know.

Why I Collect Cooking Tools

Now down to the real question: why do I have so many cooking tools?

Short answer: I love cooking. I don’t know if you knew that already, but I do.

Long answer: the more cooking tools you have, the less likely you are to be searching for a replacement tool you don’t own. For example, fish spatulas are perfect for fish… and grilled cheese… but mainly fish. If you’re cooking fish and don’t have a fish spatula, honestly, don’t cook fish. You’ll find it rather difficult to flip those things. Trust me—I would know.

But seriously, if you have everything, you’ll never be stuck. Unless something’s dirty and you don’t have another one—but that’s an easy fix… for the most part.

What Do You Have?

Lastly, I want to know—what kind of kitchen tools do you have, and what do you use them for (besides the obvious)? If you use spatulas for soup, tell me! That would be a little odd, but I still want to know. If you use spoons for cooking ground beef, let me know! Again, weird—but whatever works for you, works.
