Smooth & Savory Mashed Potatoes

Who doesn’t love a good side of mashed potatoes?
Well, I for one love potatoes — in case I haven’t told you yet! These are my go-to when I’m making them mashed. They’re creamy, savory, smooth, and guaranteed to make your taste buds happy. But enough of me talking about them — I want you to try them for yourself. After all, that’s why you’re here, isn’t it?

My Brother’s Creation

Okay, I have a confession to make. This recipe originally came from my brother’s brain. But over time, I’ve made a few tweaks of my own — and those changes came from my brain, not his. Meaning, this recipe is mine now.

We first made these potatoes together at his apartment, doing two of my favorite things: cooking, and cooking with my brother. We were making fish and chips, but the “chips” ended up cooking just a little too long in the water — basically turning into mashed potatoes. Since they were too soft to fry, my brother had a brilliant idea: “Let’s make a chef’s snack!” So we whipped them into mashed potatoes just for us. It was the perfect snack… except for one thing — potatoes are very filling. Still, we happily ate at least half that bowl anyway.

Russet Vs. Yukon

I There seems to be an unspoken battle between Russet and Yukon potatoes — most people tend to favor one or the other. But what if I told you it’s okay to love both? Let me explain.

Russet potatoes are great for:

  • Twice-Baked Potatoes: Russets are typically larger, which makes them perfect for stuffing. Their thicker skin also holds up beautifully when baked.
  • Hash Browns: Their high starch content helps them crisp up perfectly when fried.

Yukon potatoes are great for:

  • Mashed Potatoes: Yukons are naturally creamier and smoother than Russets, and when butter is added… oh, they become melt-in-your-mouth perfection.
  • Soups and Stews: Their denser texture allows them to hold their shape in soups and chowders without turning mushy.

So if you want a creamier potato, go with Yukon. If you’re after that classic starchy crispness, choose Russet. See? You really can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes This Recipe Special

This recipe is special for a number of reasons.
First, the base of it came from my brother.
Second, it’s been changed and refined into something that could easily become a staple in your family.
And third, while many people treasure recipes passed down through generations (and I do too!), I believe new recipes deserve to be celebrated as well — because they can become the next generation’s classics. This recipe, I hope, will be one of those: shared, loved, and passed along.

I Don’t Just Share Recipes

Some of you may already know this, but for those who don’t — here it is. I don’t just share recipes.
I share stories and memories from my cooking experiences — not only to entertain you but to connect with you. Every recipe I post has a special place in my heart (yes, every single one).

Most importantly, I share happiness.
I love writing — whether it’s a recipe, a Saucy Story, or a helpful kitchen tip — and I write with joy because I want you to feel that same joy while reading.

So as you make these mashed potatoes, I hope you feel the warmth, comfort, and happiness that I pour into every dish.

Now, let’s get back to the potatoes!

Smooth & Savory Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs potatoes (I recommend russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 4 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese

Directions

  1. Heavily salt a pot of water, then bring to a boil.
  2. Peel and dice the potatoes, then place them in the boiling water.
  3. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, then drain all the water. Mash the potatoes until there are little to no chunks.
  4. Add the butter, salt, and pepper, then mix well.
  5. Pour in the heavy cream and mix until smooth. Stir in the Parmesan cheese for an extra creamy texture.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes & Tips

  • Potato Ricer
If you have a potato ricer, definitely use it for these mashed potatoes! It creates an extra-creamy texture and helps eliminate any stubborn clumps — unless, of course, you like those little clumps. No judgment here!
  • Bacon, Ranch, Cheese
Just like my Fried Rice recipe, these mashed potatoes are an empty canvas. Add whatever toppings or mix-ins make you happy! Try crispy bacon bits, a drizzle of ranch, or even some shredded cheese for a rich, cheesy twist.
  • Garnish
The garnish is where you can really get creative. Mashed potatoes pair beautifully with scallions, shredded cheese, bacon bits, or even a small square of butter that melts right into the top — pure comfort in every bite.

What To Serve It With

Mashed potatoes, although great on their own, go amazing with the perfect main dish. There are many possibilities of different dishes you could pair this with, hundreds even, but here are just a few.

  • BBQ Chicken Legs
Smoky, saucy, and delicious with every buttery bite of potatoes.
  • BBQ Pork Ribs
Rich, flavorful, and a match made in comfort food heaven.
  • Grilled Salmon
A lighter main that still feels rich and satisfying alongside the potatoes.

Cooking isn’t just about food — it’s about sharing joy, laughter, and love, one dish at a time. I hope these mashed potatoes bring a little extra happiness to your table and remind you that even simple dishes can create special moments.

Until Next Time…

Stay Saucy
